Common HP Printer Display Errors and Their Meanings
Despite their rugged mechanical construction, HP printers (DeskJet, LaserJet, and Smart Tank series) can generate various sensor alerts and numeric error codes resulting from user misconfigurations, internal debris, or dust accumulation. The cryptic numbers and flashing exclamation symbols displayed on your printer’s screen or computer monitor correspond to very specific mechanical and electronic states.
In this troubleshooting guide, we examine the most common chronic display and system error codes on HP printers, their root causes, and how they are professionally repaired at our service center.

1. HP 50.1, 50.2, 50.3… 50.X (Fuser Unit) Error Codes
The undisputed nightmare of office and enterprise HP LaserJet printers is the 50.X Fuser Error Family.
- What Is It? In laser printers, the high-temperature, high-pressure roller assembly that melts and fuses toner powder onto paper fibers is called the “Fuser” (fırın ünitesi). When internal thermistors detect that the heating element is not warming up sufficiently (50.1), has exceeded maximum safety temperatures (50.2), or is experiencing voltage fluctuations, the printer locks down to prevent fire hazards.
- Root Causes: Sustained heavy copying on thick cardstock without cooling pauses, unstable electrical mains lacking proper grounding, or physical tears in the fuser film sleeve.
- The Solution: This is an internal hardware failure that cannot be fixed by software restarts. The printer must be disassembled to replace the quartz heater lamp, ceramic heating element, thermal grease, or teflon fuser film sleeve.
2. HP 49.XXXX and 79.XXXX (Network and Firmware) Errors
When an HP printer crashes during startup before reaching the “Ready” state, or abruptly halts mid-job while flashing all panel LEDs alongside Error 49 or 79, a critical firmware exception has occurred.
- What Is It? The printer’s internal formatter processor receives an excessively complex graphic command that exceeds memory buffers, or experiences a print server IP address and gateway conflict across the local network.
- The Solution: Network isolation and firmware recovery. Disconnect network Ethernet cables and USB interfaces, perform a hardware NVRAM cold reset, and flash updated firmware onto the formatter board.
3. HP E1, E2, E3, E4, E5 (DeskJet / Smart Tank) LED Errors
On home and compact office printers equipped with simple segment LED icon displays, errors appear as alphanumeric single-digit codes:
- E1 & E2 Errors (Media Mismatch): The paper loaded in the input tray (such as photo envelopes, index cards, or transparencies) does not match the dimensions configured in the operating system print driver.
- E3 & E4 Errors (Carriage Jam / Paper Jam): The printhead carriage is obstructed or paper is jammed inside the feeding rollers. Never pull jammed paper forcefully from the front output slot! Tearing a sheet leaves tiny paper fragments over the optical feed sensor, causing the E4 error to persist indefinitely.
- E5 Error (Scanner Hardware Fault): In multifunction all-in-one machines, an optical mirror blockage, fractured scanner glass, or a failing stepper motor gear causes the optical scanning carriage to stall.
Other Frequently Encountered Chronic HP Malfunctions
Beyond numeric error codes, HP hardware often exhibits the following chronic mechanical failure modes:
“Incompatible Cartridge” or Flashing Black Cartridge LED: Installing poor-quality aftermarket cartridges can cause communication dropouts with the controller chip. Furthermore, ink mist and dust coating the microscopic copper contact pins in the carriage bay disrupt conductivity, preventing the machine from recognizing the cartridge.
Vertical Black Streaks, Smudges, and Burnt Bands (OPC Drum Fault): If you install a fresh toner cartridge and clean white A4 pages still exit with dark tar-like streaks down the left margin or repeating blotches down the center, the imaging drum (OPC Drum) is scratched, light-damaged, or the internal waste toner hopper is overflowing.
Guaranteed Solutions for HP Error Codes with ProTech Bilgisayar
When your HP printer bombards your computer with error dialogs and refuses to print, repeatedly power cycling the unit or attempting random reset combinations risks permanently locking internal EEPROM registers.
At the ProTech Bilgisayar Antalya Printer Service Center, our experienced engineers accurately diagnose chronic sensor failures to deliver:
- Paper feed pickup roller and separation pad reconstruction,
- Fuser unit rebuilding, ceramic element replacement, and high-temp film renewal,
- Carriage bay micro-soldering and mechanical gear synchronization, saving your printer from the scrapheap.
