- Vertical White Lines (Dead Pixels): Continuous white lines run vertically across the length of the label where no ink is printed. These gaps indicate that specific microscopic thermal heating dots on the printhead have burned out permanently.
- Overall Faded Printing (Low Contrast): Even though ribbon and label roll specifications remain unchanged, barcodes print faint, grey, and dull. Laser scanners cannot decode these low-contrast bars.
- Ribbon Smudging, Melting, or Wrinkling: When thermal resistance balance collapses, the printhead overheats the ribbon, causing ink melt, black blotches, or letters thickening to illegible blobs.
- Platen Roller Slippage and Skewing: When alignment or downward pressure between the printhead assembly and rubber platen roller fails, labels feed crookedly and print off-center.
Why Do Thermal Printheads Fail?
Thermal printheads are consumable components; however, improper operational practices shorten their lifespan dramatically:
- Friction and Abrasive Scratches: Metal dust, staple pins, or abrasive debris trapped between the label and head instantly scratch the microscopic glass lenses of the thermal array.
- Substandard Consumables: Cheap, uncertified wax or resin ribbons and rough, poor-quality paper rolls severely abrade the protective ceramic coating.
- Neglected Cleaning: Accumulated paper dust and ribbon residue bake into hardened carbon layers over the heating line, blocking thermal dissipation and causing the printhead to burn itself out from overheating.
- Incorrect Cleaning Chemicals: Wiping printheads with household solvents, acetone, water, or industrial oils creates electrical short circuits. Cleaning must strictly be performed using pure Isopropyl Alcohol.
